If you’ve ever tried a Mamma Chia chia seed drink, then you know what all the fuss is about. It’s sweet, fruity, and just a little bit jelly-like thanks to the gelled chia seeds. Keep reading to see my very favorite recipe for a delicious and healthy chia seed drink that costs a fraction of what you’d pay at the store.

Chia seed drinks are one of those things where you either can’t get enough of them or you hate them because of the texture. You can thank the chia seeds for that dichotomy.
You see, when you combine chia seeds with water (or any other liquid, for that matter) they form a jelly-like substance similar to thinned-out Jell-O. You can see why some people might have a hard time with that texture, right? I’ll go ahead and warn you that chia drinks do have a funny texture, so if you’re weird about textures, you might not enjoy this recipe.
But if you’re already a fan of Mamma Chia drinks and/or don’t mind unusual textures, then you’ll appreciate being able to make your own chia drinks at home. You’ll be able to create just about any flavor you can think of, and you won’t have to shell out $3-4 per bottle!
And not only are chia drinks super delicious, but you also get all sorts of health benefits from the chia seeds. Think protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
But be warned: chia seeds do have a bad habit of getting stuck in your teeth, so make sure you don’t have a date or important meeting right after you drink them!
So now that you know what to expect, let me show you how to make your own copycat Mamma Chia drink so you can have all the fun, flavor, and health benefits without the price tag.

How to Make a Fruity Chia Seed Drink the Easy Way

It’s actually crazy easy to make your own chia drinks. All you need are a few ingredients and about 15 minutes to have a delicious chia seed drink that rivals even the best from Mamma Chia.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cold water
- 3 Tbsp. chia seeds
- 1 cup juice of your choice (cold)
- 1 tsp. maple syrup
Instructions
Add the water and chia seeds to a quart mason jar. Stir well to get all the seeds wet. Let stand for 10-15 minutes or until the chia seeds form a thick gel, stirring every 5 minutes to prevent clumps from forming. Once the seeds are gelled, add the juice and maple syrup and stir well to combine. Serve and enjoy!
This recipe makes (2) 1-cup servings.
You can also keep the chia drink in the refrigerator for a few days if you need to.
Recipe Notes
You can use pretty much any juice for this recipe, but these are the ones I enjoy using:
- 100% Pomegranate juice from POM Wonderful
- Pomegranate Cherry juice from POM Wonderful
- Pomegranate Blueberry juice from POM Wonderful
- Antioxidant Force juice from Smart Juice
- Any of the antioxidant juice blends from Aldi
Just be sure to read the ingredient list before you buy your juice. Make sure it contains 100% juice, real ingredients you can pronounce, and no added sweeteners.
You can also use different sweeteners depending on your preferences. I like using these:
- Maple syrup
- Honey
- Agave
Start with 1 teaspoon of sweetener. That’s usually all I need, but if you’d like your chia seed drink to be a little sweeter, you can always add more to suit your tastes.

Personally, I like my own DIY chia drinks just as much as I like Mamma Chia’s chia seed drinks, and I really can’t even tell a difference between the two. If you’re a fan of Mamma Chia, then give this recipe a try and let me know what you think. I’m pretty sure you’ll love it just as much as I do!

Hi,
I’d love to make my own as i love mamma chia. The POM 100% pomegranate juice has 34g sugar/ 8 oz plus you add sweetener. Mamma chia has 4g sugar/10 oz. How can i make this recipe and keep the sugar way low?
Hi Alissa! It’s been a while since I’ve looked up the Mamma Chia ingredient lists, so I was surprised to see that the drinks are now made with the sugar alcohol erythritol. It looks like they changed the formula in 2020 to make the drinks keto friendly. The sugar alcohol is how they’re able to keep the sugar content so low. With the old formula, the sugar content was more like 14g. If you want to make your own Mamma Chia and keep the sugar content low, you could try using less juice (just be sure to make up the difference with more water so the consistency turns out right) and add stevia to taste. Stevia is a no sugar sweetener, but be sure to start with a small amount because it has a really concentrated sweet taste.
I am very interested in trying this but wonder why you need the water? Wouldn’t it water down your juice? Can I just double the juice?
Hi Belinda! You can certainly leave out the water and double the juice instead. The flavor is sweeter and stronger though, so if you do that, you probably won’t want to add any maple syrup. Personally, I prefer the lighter flavor that comes with soaking your chia seeds in water. I think it’s more refreshing that way, but it’s definitely a personal preference thing. 🙂
If you put the drink in a blender with ice, could you minimize the textural issue and make more of a slushee?
Hi Kristina! I tried blending it once and the seeds seemed to give a slightly bitter taste to the drink. You could certainly try it though to see how you like it. 🙂
Thanks for the recipe!! I love Mamma chia and am excited to try this! I was wondering if the chia seeds settle to the bottom of the glass?
Hi Zoey! Once the chia seeds have gelled, they will stay suspended in the liquid. Just be sure to stir the seeds a few times during the gelling process so they don’t get clumped together. 🙂
Thank you!! I tried the recipe tweaked it a bit and my favorite way to have it is using sparkling water, Chia seeds (of course), kombucha, and Munk fruit, it tastes great!! Thank you for this recipe!!
I’m so glad you liked it! I love mixing mine with kombucha too. It’s so refreshing! 🙂
Thank you for this recipe. I didn’t have juice so I used water and raspberry jam to taste. It was just like Mamma Chia. First time using chia. Great idea, thank you.
Laura, you’re so welcome! I’m glad water and jam worked well for you. It sounds like a delicious combination. Thanks for sharing that tip with me! 🙂
