Sometimes you just need a good chili sauce recipe for carrot dogs and veggie burgers. But instead of using ground beef (which would completely ruin your carrot dog or veggie burger), you can make a delicious vegan hot dog chili with quinoa!

I’ve made this recipe a few times to go with our carrot hot dogs, and it’s a hit every time! The flavor is fantastic, but the best part is that it’s actually super easy to throw together.

Let me show you how to make a super simple plant-based hot dog chili for your next cookout!

How to Make Vegan Hot Dog Chili

Vegan hot dog chili sauce

This vegan hot dog chili is adapted from Terri Edwards’ recipe on EatPlant-Based.com.

My plant-based chili sauce is:

  • Whole food, plant-based
  • Vegan
  • Oil-free
  • Dairy-free
  • Gluten-free
  • 100% delicious!

And it really does come together in about 20 minutes, so it’s a quick recipe to throw together when you’re low on time!

Vegan chili sauce for hot dogs

Ingredients

  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed
  • ½ cup tomato sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce (find one that doesn’t use anchovies)
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • ½ tsp. smoked paprika (be sure to use smoked, not regular paprika)
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp. sea salt

Instructions

1. Heat a nonstick pot over medium high heat and add the onions. Sauté until soft, adding a tablespoon of water to the pot as needed to keep the onions from sticking.

2. Once the onions are translucent, add the remaining ingredients to the pot, stir, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer about 10-15 minutes or until the quinoa is cooked.

3. Serve on carrot dogs or veggie burgers.

Recipe Notes

This recipe makes about 2 2/3 cups of chili, which is about (8) 1/3-cup servings.

This chili sauce is best served immediately because the quinoa will continue to soak up the liquid as it sets. However, you can still make it ahead of time if you need to. Simply add more vegetable broth to thin it down a bit if it starts to look too dry.
