I recently tried the Splendid Spoon plant-based meal delivery service to see if it’s really as delicious and convenient as the company claims. Plant-based smoothies, soups, and grain bowls already made and ready to eat?! I had to see what this was all about.

So let me tell you about my experience: how it works, what I thought of the food, who I think can benefit from using this meal delivery service, and who I think Splendid Spoon simply won’t work for.

This is my honest review of Splendid Spoon, along with a $10 off coupon to try it for yourself!

Are you ready? Let’s dive right in!

How Splendid Spoon works

Splendid Spoon is a plant-based meal delivery service that sends you ready-to-eat smoothies, soups, and grain bowls – no cooking required! For the soups and grain bowls, you simply heat them in the microwave or eat them cold. They’re delicious both ways!

All of Splendid Spoon’s meals are plant-based, vegan, non-GMO, and gluten-free. They also come in packaging that is BPA-free and recyclable!

After you select your meal plan, you choose the individual meals that sound good to you. Right now, there are 14 smoothie flavors to choose from and 27 soups/grain bowls to choose from. Each week, you can customize your menu to try new flavors or stick with your old favorites.

Your Splendid Spoon package is then shipped via FedEx in a box packed with dry ice so your meals stay nice and cool in transit.

Splendid Spoon also makes it easy to pause or cancel your weekly deliveries by logging into your online account. The only caveat is that you have to make these adjustments before the cutoff time, which is usually a few days before your delivery date.

Splendid Spoon meal plans and pricing

Splendid Spoon has a couple different meal plan options depending on your needs, so you can choose between these three options:

  • Lunch: 5 bowls (soups and/or grain bowls) delivered weekly for $65 per week
  • Breakfast + Lunch: 5 smoothies + 5 bowls (soups and/or grain bowls) delivered weekly for $95 per week
  • 7-Day Breakfast + Lunch: 7 smoothies + 7 bowls (soups and/or grain bowls) delivered weekly for $135 per week

Depending on which package you choose, Splendid Spoon costs about $9.50 to $13 per meal. The 7-Day Breakfast + Lunch plan gives you the biggest bang for your buck at $9.50 per meal.

You can also get $10 off of your first delivery!

What I thought of my first Splendid Spoon delivery

Splendid Spoon soup and grain bowls

I was pretty excited to select my meals for my first ever Splendid Spoon delivery. There were so many to choose from!

For my smoothies, I chose:

  • Blueberry Coconut
  • Dragon Fruit Berry
  • Orange Hibiscus
  • Chocolate Cherry
  • Raspberry Cacao

For my bowls, I chose:

  • Cuban Black Bean Bowl
  • Lemon Wild Rice & Broccoli Bowl
  • Tuscan White Bean & Tomato Bowl
  • Moroccan Lentil Soup
  • Garden Minestrone Soup

Josh and I both tried each meal, so I’ll detail our thoughts below.

Note: Josh isn’t a big fan of smoothies, so he probably isn’t the best judge of smoothie flavors. He’ll flat-out tell you that he only likes the chocolate smoothie I make. So take his smoothie reviews with a grain of salt! 🙂

Blueberry Coconut Smoothie

Summer: I really liked this smoothie! It had a thick texture, almost like drinking applesauce, so it was very filling. I loved the coconut pieces in it! I would choose this one again.

Josh: This one was alright. I liked it better than the other smoothies.

Dragon Fruit Berry Smoothie

Summer: I didn’t think this one had much flavor, but I did enjoy the light hint of pineapple. I probably wouldn’t choose this one again.

Josh: Didn’t like this one.

Orange Hibiscus Smoothie

Summer: I liked the orange flavor. It was very refreshing! I would choose this one again.

Josh: This one was a bit gritty, so not a fan.

(The gritty texture he’s referring to is the pea protein powder. It was a bit more noticeable in this smoothie than in the other ones, but I didn’t mind it at all.)

Chocolate Cherry Smoothie

Summer: My favorite of all! I loved the cacao chunks, and even adjusted my own chocolate smoothie recipe so that it has cacao chunks too. I’d definitely get this one again.

Josh: Wasn’t floored by this one, although I do like that we have cacao chunks in Summer’s chocolate smoothie now.

Raspberry Cacao Smoothie

Summer: This one was very good. I’d choose it again.

Josh: Not floored by this one either.

The bottom line? I enjoyed almost every smoothie, and I think I have excellent taste in smoothie flavors. Josh, not so much. Ha!

Now let’s talk about the bowls.

Cuban Black Bean Bowl

Summer: This one has plantains in it, which I’d never had before. I liked the texture for a little while, but then it started to wear on me. We ended up throwing out about half of the plantains. I enjoyed the overall flavor of this bowl, but it was a bit spicy for my taste. I probably wouldn’t get it again.

Josh: Didn’t like the plantains but liked everything else.

Lemon Wild Rice & Broccoli Bowl

Summer: I really liked this one, but it needed a little salt. I’d order it again!

Josh: Same!

Tuscan White Bean & Tomato Bowl

Summer: This one smells like pizza! I had never tried sorghum before, but I liked the texture of those little grains. I thought the bowl was flavorful and would order it again.

Josh: This wasn’t a favorite, but it was still okay.

Moroccan Lentil Soup

Summer: I liked this one and would order it again.

Josh: Favorite! It tastes just like chili. Very hearty.

Garden Minestrone Soup

Summer: I loved the flavor and texture of this one. The zucchini bits gave it a nice crunch. I’d definitely order it again!

Josh: Liked this one. It needed a little salt though.

Overall, we liked almost all of the bowls we ordered! They were packed with flavor and new ingredients that we’d never tried before. The best part was having meals already made – all we had to do was pop them in the microwave for a minute or two.

Josh especially liked having pre-made meals that he could just heat and eat when he was hungry.

Is Splendid Spoon healthy?

Splendid Spoon smoothies 2

Yes! Splendid Spoon meals are made with fresh, plant-based ingredients that are non-GMO.

You won’t find any dairy, meat, fillers, or preservatives in your Splendid Spoon meals, but you will find fresh fruit, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, and legumes.

Is Splendid Spoon 100% whole food, plant-based compliant?

While Splendid Spoon meals are made from plant-based ingredients, not all of them are 100% whole food, plant-based compliant.

Most of the soups and grain bowls are made with either coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. Oil is typically not allowed on a strict, 100% whole food, plant-based diet, so these meals would not be considered compliant.

Note: I consider myself low-oil. I try to avoid oils as much as possible, but I am not completely oil-free. Personally, I didn’t mind that the soups and grain bowls are made with a little bit of oil.

Also, most of the soups, grain bowls, and smoothies have salt in them. Salt is generally acceptable on a whole food, plant-based diet, but there is a branch of WFPB that avoids all added salt.

You can read the ingredients for each of Splendid Spoon’s meals to see if they fit your particular needs.

Is Splendid Spoon gluten-free?

Yes! All of Splendid Spoon’s meals are gluten-free.

Is Splendid Spoon organic?

Splendid Spoon is not completely organic, but this is what they had to say about their ingredients:

“We absolutely put fresh, healthy ingredients at the top of our mission. With that in mind, 95% of our smoothies are organic and we are 100% GMO-free. When creating our soup and grain bowls we prioritize the ‘Dirty Dozen’ list (Celery, Tomatoes, Kale, Potatoes, Spinach, and Strawberries to name a few) while sourcing. For more information on what’s organic vs. conventionally grown, have a look at our ingredients on our meals page or the labels on your containers.”

Is Splendid Spoon filling?

All of the Splendid Spoon meals we tried were filling. The smoothies kept me full for several hours, and the soups and grain bowls kept me satisfied until dinner. In fact, I was only able to eat about half of a bowl in a single sitting because it was so filling.

Josh agreed that the bowls kept him satisfied too.

What about dinner?

You’ll notice that the Splendid Spoon packages only cover breakfast and lunch. It’s up to you to provide dinner, whether you cook at home or order out.

If you have an especially hectic schedule throughout the week, you might prefer to meal prep your dinners on the weekend. By meal prepping on the weekends and using Splendid Spoon for breakfast and lunch, you can save a lot of time in the kitchen!
