In my quest to eliminate as many harmful chemicals as possible from my home, I’ve had to rethink my choice in beauty products. I haven’t completely switched to all-natural makeup, but I’m making small changes to my skin care routine here and there.

A few years ago, I stopped buying traditional moisturizer. I’ve had sensitive skin basically my whole life, and I already struggled to find a moisturizer that didn’t make my face itch like crazy.

Prior to the switch, I used Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturizer. It worked without causing an allergic reaction, so that was a plus. It also had a better ingredient list than most other moisturizers on the market.

Still, I didn’t like that I couldn’t pronounce many of the ingredients on the label. And once I started learning more about the harmful effects of the chemicals found in many beauty products, I just couldn’t buy it anymore.

Instead, I started making my own face oil. I’ve been using this same recipe for about three years now, and I couldn’t be happier!

My skin looks better than ever, I rarely have breakouts, and my skin is neither too oily nor too dry (it was on the oilier side before). I don’t even use foundation or face powder anymore! Even without base makeup, I get many compliments on how bright and smooth my skin looks.

I’m sure my mostly plant-based lifestyle has a big part in this too. By eliminating or drastically reducing the foods that contribute to breakouts and problematic skin (think meat, dairy, fried foods, and sugar), my skin naturally looks healthier.

But by adding this powerhouse face oil to my daily beauty routine, my face gets a boost of good-for-your-skin goodness every single day!

If you’d like to make your own DIY face oil so you can have glowing skin too, then you’re in the right place! Here’s my simple recipe.

Simple, 3-Ingredient Face Oil

With only three ingredients, this face oil is easy to make. And even though the ingredients may cost you a little bit initially, you’ll be able to make several batches and thus save money in the long run!

Carrier Oil

The main ingredient in this face oil is jojoba oil. This is the carrier oil.

Carrier oils dilute essential oils to a safe level so you can apply them to your skin. Common carrier oils include jojoba, grapeseed, sweet almond, olive, and coconut oils, among others.

I prefer using jojoba oil on my face since it most closely mimics skin’s natural sebum. It absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue.

I’ve tried this recipe with grapeseed oil and sweet almond oil. I’ve also used olive oil and coconut oil in other beauty recipes. By far, jojoba oil feels the best on my skin because it isn’t greasy like other carrier oils can be.

Essential Oils

For this face oil, I like to use lavender and frankincense essential oils.

Lavender is naturally antibacterial, so that’s a plus for acne-prone skin. It also has healing properties to help blemishes heal more quickly.

Frankincense helps skin cells regenerate. Lots of people like this essential oil because it helps with aging skin and elasticity problems.

Personally, I like that it helps with acne scarring. I rarely have breakouts, but sometimes a stubborn breakout leaves me with a dark spot or two. I can tell that frankincense regenerates those skin cells so that I no longer have the dark, scarred spots. Woohoo!

Recipe and application

In a 1-ounce dropper bottle, add 3 drops of lavender essential oil and 6 drops of frankincense essential oil. Fill the rest of the way with jojoba oil. Gently swirl the bottle to mix the oils together.

To apply, add 3-4 drops of face oil to your palm and rub your hands together. Gently pat your face and neck with your hands, pressing the oil into your skin.

Please, don’t drag or pull on your skin!

Apply your face oil to clean skin morning and night.

Special Considerations

Here are a few things you should know when making your face oil:

Bottles

Make sure to use glass bottles any time you mix up a product that contains essential oils. Essential oils will eat through plastic, so plastic bottles are not good for this face oil recipe.

Also, be sure that your glass bottle is either amber or cobalt blue. Essential oils are light-sensitive, meaning they will lose their potency when exposed to light. We want our face oil to have the full effect of these powerhouse essential oils!

Brands

I’m not particularly brand loyal to any one essential oil company.

I have used brands such as NOW, Aura Cacia, and Young Living, as well as house brands from Brambleberry and my local health food store.

Here is my personal opinion on brands:

I do like Young Living. I can tell a difference in the quality of their oils, so when I need a specific health benefit, I will typically go with Young Living.

However, since Young Living is more expensive, I do still use other brands when I’m not as concerned with a specific result. For example, when diffusing oils for fragrance or making cleaning products.

In my face oil, I typically grab whatever I have on hand. If I have Young Living oils, then I’ll use them. But if I’m out of face oil and need to make a batch right now and all I have is non-Young Living oils, then I’ll use what I already have at home.

My advice is to do what works best for your budget, your peace of mind, and your desired outcome. 🙂

Exfoliation

After using this face oil recipe for a few years, I have noticed that I need to exfoliate my skin more often. I believe this has to do with the Frankincense essential oil.

Since Frankincense helps skin cells regenerate, I find that my skin cells turn over more quickly and can start to feel a little rough if I don’t exfoliate the dead cells off.

Typically, I exfoliate my skin every two or three days using a two-step process. I start with a coarser scrub made from sugar or sea salt mixed with a tiny bit of olive oil.

After exfoliating with the sugar/salt scrub, I go over my skin a second time with a finer baking soda scrub.

Easy peasy!

    1. Ah, then face oil might not work for you. 🙁 My skin used to break out but I never had a problem with this face oil recipe. The lavender and tea tree essential oils helped cut down on the bacteria that was causing my breakouts.
