I love this time of year: fall decorations, pumpkins, leaves swirling around the pavement in my rear view mirror, and crisp mornings and evenings. There’s just something magical about fall!
Along with fall comes Halloween, and that means lots of scary movies playing on television and Netflix. Surely I’m not the only one who is absolutely terrified of scary movies!
Still, I like to watch non-scary Halloween movies and have them playing in the background to set the Halloween mood in my home. Josh and I have a handful of movies that we watch every year, and there are also a few others that we watch every few years. Let me share with you a list of our absolute favorites. Maybe you’ll find a new favorite in there too!

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Ah, Charlie Brown. We have a three-disc holiday collection that features this movie along with A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas. We usually watch all three every year. There’s just something about the Peanuts that make the season complete!
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
We added The Ghost and Mr. Chicken to our Halloween collection a few years ago. I spotted it at Walmart and thought it would be a funny addition to our current mix. It didn’t disappoint! It’s classic Don Knotts with his slapstick humor.
Ghostbusters 1 & 2
You just can’t beat a classic like Ghostbusters! Some people only like the first movie, but Josh and I enjoy the second one just as much.
As for the third installment of Ghostbusters, I haven’t actually watched it, so you’ll have to do your own research there.
Another 80s classic, Beetlejuice is a great addition to every non-scary Halloween movie collection. Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
The Addams Family
I can’t believe I’m just now getting on The Addams Family bandwagon! I watched it for the first time last year and loved every minute of it.
Dark Shadows is a family favorite around here. It’s definitely quirky, in true Johnny Depp fashion. If you like his odd sense of humor, then you’ll probably enjoy this one! We’ve already watched it once this season, and we plan to watch it again before Halloween. It’s one of those movies that I can watch over and over and never get bored.
Harry Potter (8 Movies)
I’m not 100% certain, but I think Josh and I have watched the entire Harry Potter series four or more times since we’ve been married. And I know he watched them even more growing up! Even as adults, we love getting lost in the world of Hogwarts, wizards, and magic! Halloween just isn’t complete without at least watching the first movie in the series.
Get the Harry Potter movie series here.
Josh has declared Halloween our official night to watch Hocus Pocus. This was one of his favorites growing up, so we make sure to watch it every year. If you grew up watching Hocus Pocus too (or even if you didn’t!), you’ll enjoy reliving your childhood days with this movie.
Halloweentown 1 & 2
Halloweentown isn’t exactly Josh’s cup of tea (er, witch’s brew?), but I grew up watching Marnie and Grandma Aggie save their beloved town. I think the first two movies are better than the last two, but that might just be a personal preference.
The Good Witch (7 Movies)
The Good Witch movies are probably some of my favorite movies ever! I actually watch them year-round, but they’re especially good at Halloween.
Bonus: Good Witch Television Series
Since everyone loved The Good Witch movies so much, Hallmark started a television series to continue the story! I love Good Witch just as much as the original movies, so it’s definitely on my Halloween watch list.
