Hi Alissa! It's been a while since I've looked up the Mamma Chia ingredient lists, so I was surprised to see that the drinks are now made with the sugar alcohol erythritol. It looks like they changed the formula in 2020 to make the drinks keto friendly. The sugar alcohol is how they're able to keep the sugar content so low. With the old formula, the sugar content was more like 14g. If you want to make your own Mamma Chia and keep the sugar content low, you could try using less juice (just be sure to make up the difference with more water so the consistency turns out right) and add stevia to taste. Stevia is a no sugar sweetener, but be sure to start with a small amount because it has a really concentrated sweet taste.

Hi,
I’d love to make my own as i love mamma chia. The POM 100% pomegranate juice has 34g sugar/ 8 oz plus you add sweetener. Mamma chia has 4g sugar/10 oz. How can i make this recipe and keep the sugar way low?

In reply to <a href="https://prettybirdkitchen.com/easy-fruity-chia-drink-copycat-mamma-chia/#comment-397">Belinda</a>.

Hi Belinda! You can certainly leave out the water and double the juice instead. The flavor is sweeter and stronger though, so if you do that, you probably won't want to add any maple syrup. Personally, I prefer the lighter flavor that comes with soaking your chia seeds in water. I think it's more refreshing that way, but it's definitely a personal preference thing. :)

I am very interested in trying this but wonder why you need the water? Wouldn't it water down your juice? Can I just double the juice?

Hi Kristina! I tried blending it once and the seeds seemed to give a slightly bitter taste to the drink. You could certainly try it though to see how you like it. :)

If you put the drink in a blender with ice, could you minimize the textural issue and make more of a slushee?

Hi Zoey! Once the chia seeds have gelled, they will stay suspended in the liquid. Just be sure to stir the seeds a few times during the gelling process so they don't get clumped together. :)
